Laboratory Director: Shilla Chakrabarty, Ph.D

Dr. Shilla ChakrabartyDr. Shilla Chakrabarty serves as the Laboratory Director and she also supervises the on site hormone and Andrology laboratory and the sperm bank at the clinic. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta, India, and has been working in the field of reproductive endocrinology for more than fifteen years. She is responsible for maintaining the quality controls for the onsite laboratory in the Houston Bay Area fertility center.

For the past several years, she has been collaborating with Dr. Nagamani on a number of research projects. One of the major projects has been to understand how insulin affects the functionality of the ovaries since women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome have high levels of insulin in addition to high levels of androgens (male hormones) in their circulation. The results of their studies suggest that if the levels of insulin are increased during pubertal development as seen in adolescent obesity, the circulatory levels of androgens increase and the ovaries develop polycystic changes. Preventing adolescent obesity may prevent development of PCOS during adulthood.

Dr. Chakrabarty has several publications in this area in peer-reviewed journals, and has made many presentations of her scientific work at various national and international meetings. Besides her research activities, Dr. Chakrabarty has been actively involved in teaching at various levels. Her wide experiences include teaching clinical fellows, and students in medical, graduate and undergraduate schools. Her other academic contributions include reviewing grants and manuscripts, judging scientific publications, and serving on various academic committees.
